11. Paleontological Resource Awareness for Burn Practitioners (FIRE11)

Description

Audience: Burn crew members and burn plan authors working in geologically sensitive areas

A focused add-on module frequently paired with cultural resource awareness training. Prescribed burns in the foothills and coastal ranges of Santa Clara County can expose or disturb paleontological resources through soil disturbance during line construction, equipment staging, and post-burn site access. Participants learn to identify common fossil types in field context, understand basic formation geology relevant to South Bay burn units, and know the reporting obligations under California law when paleontological resources are discovered. Covers how paleontological resource sensitivity is assessed during burn plan review and when a paleontological resource assessment (PRA) may be warranted.
