10. Cultural Burning Awareness: History, Practice, and the Modern Legal Framework (FIRE10)

Description

Audience: All PBA members, community volunteers, and interested public

An introductory workshop on the history and ecology of cultural burning in California, the distinction between cultural burns and prescribed burns under current state law, and what SB 310 and the Prescribed Fire Liability Pilot Program mean for PBA members who may work near or alongside tribal practitioners. Covers the role of Indigenous fire in shaping the landscapes of the South Bay and Central Coast prior to European colonization, the suppression of cultural burning practices over the past century, and the current revitalization of cultural fire stewardship across California. This workshop may be co-developed or co-delivered with a local tribal cultural practitioner to provide firsthand perspective on the relationship between fire, culture, and land stewardship.
