6. Eyes in the Field: Environmental Awareness for Prescribed Burn Volunteers (FIRE6)

Description

Audience: Community volunteers, general burn crew members, and non-specialist participants

A half-day community-facing workshop designed for burn crew members with no prior biology or environmental training. Participants learn to recognize active bird nests, identify wildlife sign (tracks, burrows, scat), distinguish sensitive plant types from common species, and know when and how to flag a concern for a qualified biologist. Covers practical crew-level decision-making: what to do when you find something unexpected, how to communicate up the chain, and what activities require a stop-work call. This workshop is designed to be accessible, engaging, and directly applicable to the next time participants are in the field.
