Wildfire Fuel Mitigation

3. Habitat and Fuels Assessment Literacy (FIRE3)

Description

Audience: Burn crew members, burn plan authors, and land managers

Teaches participants to read vegetation maps and understand fire behavior by fuel type, with a focus on plant communities common to Santa Clara County including annual grasslands, chaparral, oak woodland, and riparian zones. Participants learn to identify sensitive habitat types that require burn plan modifications, including vernal pools, serpentine grasslands, and riparian corridors supporting listed species. Includes an introduction to GIS-based parcel-level vegetation and species mapping tools that can support landscape-scale burn planning for fire departments and PBA members.
